PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana 2026: Eligibility, Amount and Online Application

Many talented students want to study after Class 12, but college expenses can become a problem. The PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana 2026 offers financial help to deserving students from families with limited income.

This programme is also called the PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS). It is managed by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. Students selected under the scheme receive the scholarship directly in their bank accounts.

What Is the PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana?

PM-USP CSSS is a merit-based scholarship supported by the Central Government. It is meant for students who have performed very well in the Class 12 board examination and are now studying in a regular college course.

The scheme provides a fixed yearly amount instead of paying the complete college fee. Up to 82,000 new scholarships can be awarded in a year, and half are kept for female students.

What Financial Help Can a Selected Student Receive?

The payment depends on the course level and the year of study.

Study levelAmount available
First three years of a graduation course₹12,000 each year
Postgraduate course₹20,000 each year
Fourth and fifth years of an eligible five-year course₹20,000 each year
First three years of BTech or BE₹12,000 each year
Fourth year of BTech or BE₹20,000

The scholarship is transferred using Direct Benefit Transfer. Therefore, the applicant should have an active savings account in their own name.

Who Is Eligible to Submit an Application?

An applicant needs to meet all the main requirements, not only the income condition. The student should:

  • Be above the 80th percentile among successful Class 12 students of the relevant board and stream.
  • Have admission to a regular undergraduate, postgraduate or approved professional degree course.
  • Study at an institution recognised by the appropriate educational or regulatory authority.
  • Belong to a family with a gross yearly income of no more than ₹4.5 lakh.
  • Not receive another scholarship, government fee waiver or fee reimbursement.
  • Have an account in their own name for receiving the payment.

Students taking a diploma, correspondence course or distance-learning programme cannot claim this scholarship component.

Does 80th Percentile Mean 80% Marks?

No. These two terms have different meanings. A score of 80% tells how many marks a student obtained. The 80th percentile shows the student’s position compared with other successful candidates from the same education board and stream.

The qualifying level can differ by stream, board and year. Applicants should check the percentile cut-off declared for their board.

Which College Courses Are Allowed?

The programme supports regular degrees such as BA, BSc and BCom. Eligible postgraduate and professional courses, including engineering and medicine, may also be covered.

The institution must be recognised and have a valid AISHE code. Students can confirm the code with their college.

Diploma programmes and courses completed through distance or correspondence mode are outside the scope of this scholarship.

What Documents Should an Applicant Keep Ready?

The portal may verify some information digitally, but students should prepare the following records:

  • Aadhaar number or Aadhaar enrolment details
  • NSP One Time Registration number
  • Class 12 marksheet
  • Current admission or enrolment information
  • A valid family income certificate
  • Student’s bank passbook or account information
  • Caste certificate, when applicable
  • Disability or UDID information, when applicable
  • Mobile number connected with Aadhaar
  • Course, institution and AISHE details

Personal information should match across Aadhaar, bank and academic records. A mismatch can affect verification or payment.

How Can a Student Apply Online for PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana?

The complete process takes place on the National Scholarship Portal. An application submitted on paper or sent directly to the Ministry will not be considered.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the National Scholarship Portal.
  2. Create a One Time Registration number using Aadhaar or an Aadhaar enrolment ID.
  3. Sign in with the OTR details.
  4. Choose the correct academic year and application type.
  5. Search for PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students.
  6. Fill in the personal, education, income and bank sections.
  7. Add the documents requested by the portal.
  8. Review every entry carefully.
  9. Submit the form and save its acknowledgement or application number.

The same OTR is used throughout the student’s academic journey, so it should be saved safely.

What Are the Application Dates for 2026–27?

The National Scholarship Portal opened the 2026–27 academic session on 1 June 2026. Its current student announcement lists 31 October 2026 as the closing date for PM-USP CSSS renewal applications. Verification continues after the student deadline.

What Happens After the Form Is Submitted?

Submission is only the first stage. The college or university checks the student’s admission and other information. After institute verification, the application goes to the concerned state-level authority for another review.

Students should check their dashboard regularly. A defective form must be corrected within the available time. Contact the institute if verification remains pending near the deadline.

How Can the Scholarship Be Renewed?

The benefit does not continue automatically. A renewal form must be submitted for each eligible academic year. Normally, the student must obtain at least 50% marks in the annual examination and keep attendance at 75% or higher.

The student must remain in an eligible course and maintain proper conduct. Serious indiscipline can stop the scholarship.

Changing college does not always end the benefit. Renewal may continue if the new institution and course are eligible. Payment is not given for a year whose renewal deadline was missed, although later renewal may be possible under the rules.

How Can a Student Check the Payment?

Application progress can be viewed through the NSP dashboard. Once payment is approved, it is deposited into the student’s Aadhaar-seeded bank account through DBT. Payment information can also be checked through the “Know Your Payment” facility on the PFMS website.

The account must remain active and accept DBT payments. It must not belong to a parent or another person.

Why Can This PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana Be Helpful?

PM Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana 2026 can help pay for study materials, transport, connectivity and routine college needs.

Merit alone is not enough; the student must satisfy the income, course and other conditions as well. Applicants should use the official portal, provide matching information and follow both application and verification deadlines. For the latest changes, always check the National Scholarship Portal and the Ministry of Education website.
